Removal of the last COVID-19 public health requirements

15 August 2023

The last of the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted this week, meaning that visitors and New Zealanders alike would no longer have to isolate for 7 days if they caught COVID-19.

This was welcomed by many in the tourism industry. “We have been advocating for the removal of this last COVID-19 measure for many months and are delighted that this summer we’ll be able to care for our visitors without restriction, and that tourism businesses will be able to manage COVID-19 in their workplaces in partnership with their people,” TIA Chief Executive Rebecca Ingram says.

Several factors made it possible to drop the last COVID-19 restrictions including lower COVID-19 related hospital admissions, higher community immunity, and the passing of the peak of the flu season peak.

However, the official advice is still that people stay at home for five days if they are unwell or test positive for COVID-19.

The business events industry also welcolmed the news for conference delegates and incentive visitors.

“This means international and domestic business events' organisers and delegates can now plan with confidence and be assured New Zealand's approach to the pandemic has moved from an emergency response to sustainable long-term management," BEIA Chief Executive, Lisa Hopkins said.

For most workplaces, COVID-19 is now like other community-based infections and is not a risk arising from their work that needs to be managed from a health and safety perspective.

However, workplaces can expect to continue dealing with issues such as COVID-19 related sick leave. If your workplace is impacted by COVID-19 see further information on the WorkSafe website

All financial support such as the COVID-19 Leave Support Scheme has now been removed, except for the Small Business Cash Flow Loan Scheme which remains open until 31 December.
